Are Brick-and-Mortar Retailers Keeping Up In The Digital Space?

Today marks Amazon’s first ever “Christmas in July” celebration, also know as “Prime Day.” This online retailer is scheduled to roll out a super-sized summer savings event, promising bigger deals better than traditional Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Prime Day was announced online a week ago, and since then, big box stores such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target have caught up to this new promotion, quickly hopping onboard with their “Christmas in July” deals. This shows that brick-and-mortar retail stores are becoming smarter and quicker when competing against online retailers. In short, they want to play the same game as the digital giants.

Since the advent of e-commerce, brick-and-mortar retailers have struggled to keep up with consumers’ demands for convenient, online shopping. But with the evolution and expansion of e-commerce, brick-and-mortar stores have been able to catch up with sites like Amazon to create a more personalized and engaging experience.

Today, big box stores can quickly research what other competitors are doing and with a click of a “Send,” “Tweet” or “Post” button, they can post better deals just as fast as their competition. With consumers’ high demand in shopping on mobile devices, digital efforts are becoming the “new” strategy of marketing. Big box stores are integrating the use of email marketing, SMS messaging, social media and online promotion to create awareness about products and sales. They are also leveraging technology, such as installing in-store kiosks, digital storefronts, and online clothing reservation systems to give customers a more “interactive” experience.
